 President’s message

The NMA has had a busy year running our education nights, annual dinner, medical student events and awarding scholarships. I would like to thank the board members for their work and dedication over the last year. Prof Raj Sundaraj has resigned from the board and will be replaced by A/P Stuart Lane. We thank Raj for his work on the board.

Education nights

Our series of education nights have been well attended by GPs, specialists, JMOs and medical students. This year’s topics included cardiology, knee injuries, facial pain, obesity and weight loss surgery and preconception carrier screening. We thank all our speakers and sponsors who made each evening a great success.

More nights are planned for 2019 and the information will be available on our website early in the New Year.

Annual dinner

This year’s Annual Dinner was held on Friday 7th September 2018 at Lakeside Restaurant,

Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.

Our speaker was Dr Stuart Lane who shared his experience of swimming the English Channel – ‘Swimming La Manche’. Stuart demonstrated how determination and the support of a team came together to achieve his goal of swimming the English Channel.

Swimming for over 12 hours, Stuart became the 1753rd person to swim the Channel successfully, establishing his place in an elite group. He also raised funds for Australia’s first follow-up clinic for people discharged from an intensive care unit.

Four of our student scholarship winners from 2017 presented their experiences from their electives:

  • Sarah Andela                        Ecudor
  • Charmaine Chee                 Tanzania
  • James Gray                           South Africa
  • Leisel Woon                          Zambia

The two other recipients were:

  • Emily Jenkins                       Solomon Islands
  • William Wu                            Vietnam

We would like to thank Barratt & Smith Pathology for their generous sponsorship of our annual dinner. Next year’s dinner will be held on Friday 27th September 2019 in Penrith so please hold the date.

Student events

The “Welcome Dinner” this year for students of the University of Sydney, Nepean Campus was held on Friday 23rd March at El Phoenician Restaurant in Parramatta and our speaker was Associate Professor Stephen Fuller Consultant Haematologist.

In 2019, the dinner will be held on Friday 30 March. All NMA members welcome.

For further information about NMA activities, please email Julie Mils: julie.nma@outlook.com

We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Dr Michelle Crockett
