NMA Elective Scholarship

I completed my 2 month elective placement in Cambodia in two different healthcare settings. My first placement was based at the Helen Bonner Health Centre, part of a growing NGO called New Hope Cambodia, located on the outskirts of Siem Reap. The main focus of the NGO is to offer free education to poor children who otherwise are unable to afford to attend school. They also offer free basic healthcare for the children and their families, as well as social outreach and sponsorship to poor and underprivileged people in slum villages on the outskirts of Siem Reap. Overall, it was a great experience to see how the NGO was making a difference to this community. Thanks to friends and family, I was able to raise $800 for the NGO and if you would like to make any further donations to this organisation you can head to this fundraising page http://makingadifference.gofundraise.com.au/page/plunketts

My second placement was at a government paediatric hospital called National Pediatric Hospital in the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh. I was based in the surgical department and was able to see many interesting congenital cases in general & orthopaedic surgery in the operating theatres, on the ward and in outpatient clinics. Overall it was a fantastic opportunity to experience medicine in a developing country and to see how medicine is practiced quite differently to that seen in Australia. I would like to thank NMA for your kind scholarship to help me undertake my elective placement in Cambodia and I hope that one day I will be able to return as qualified doctor to offer my medical support to the people of Cambodia.
